Capodimonte Figurines. Rare or Fake?

Rabbit Catchers

Capodimonte - The Rabbit Catchers

The Capodimonte factory, based in Naples, operated from 1743-1759 and was under the patronage of Charles Bourbon. At this time, the manufacture of porcelain objects was considered something of a status symbol and many wealthy aristocrats and royal family members were prepared to provide finance to establish their factory as the most outstanding.

It is probably true to say that Capodimonte produced some of the finest porcelain of the 18th century. A modeller of particular excellence and note was Giuseppe Gricci who had a preference for creating small-headed figures. The painting style was a distinctive use of stippled-on colours. The modelling was natural and indicated a high degree of artistic ability.

But the early pieces of Capodimonte are rare.

They were often unmarked so it requires skill and familiarity to recognise such an item from this first period of manufacture. Later pieces were, fortunately, marked with a violet or blue, fleur de lys, a symbol also used by Buen Retiro, Spain, where the factory was relocated in 1759.

Be aware that pieces from the Naples factory, especially the early items produced, are very similar to Capodimonte and often mistakenly attributed. Care, therefore, needs to be taken if a large investment is to be made. Also, fakes of Capodimonte figurines exist and they are still being produced. So, let buyer beware!

Today, a favourite collecting area for Capodimonte enthusiasts is cane handles and silver-mounted snuff boxes. They can still appear on the market and are relatively affordable. Workmanship is exquisite and they are very desirable items. Also, many modern items of ‘Capodimonte’ are easily available and they do have a following. But experts agree that the fineness of the early items, manufactured in the 18th century, cannot be equalled.
