Dresden Figurines Value Positive

Dresden figurines are collected by many who appreciate modelling quality and fine colouring. As far as value is concerned, the Dresden figurines value index is definitely positive!

Dresden figurines remain desirable and high prices can be paid for the right models. Perhaps the most popular Dresden figurines are the ‘lace’ porcelain figurines. These large and often elaborate figure groups were produced in great numbers and are still being manufactured today.

Image: Dresden Lace Single FigurineThe “Dresden lace,” technique involved having real lace immersed in liquid porcelain and then incorporated into the figures by skilled decorators. This produced an extremely delicate effect and mimicked sumptuous fabric of the time.

But the main disadvantage of these Dresden china figurines is the fact that they are very fragile and easily damaged. Extra care needs to be taken when handling and finding an unrepaired piece is now becoming a rarity.

Arguably the most famous Dresden china figurines are the so called “crinoline groups.”

These depict various scenes from court life – playing musical instruments, dancing and the occasional subdued, love scenario. Almost all of these figurines were created with the Dresden, blue crown mark as also seen on Dresden dinnerware.

It is important to note that other factories, imitating the Dresden style, managed to reach quite a high degree of ceramics artistry that definitely rivalled the Dresden pieces. So, look out for figurines from Sitzendorf, Ernst Bohne & Sons, the Irish Dresden Company, and Alboth & Kaiser. They are attractive items to collect and should become increasingly rare and valuable.

Inevitably, much of the documentation relating to the history of porcelain manufacture in Dresden was destroyed by the allied bombing of the city during World War II. In that dreadful raid virtually all of the Dresden porcelain decorating studios was destroyed along with many important historical documents.

However, owing largely to the huge popularity of Dresden china figurines and that style of porcelain production, the desire for Dresden figurines is still very buoyant. Pieces scan still be acquired in antique shops and from other collectors.

The Dresden figurines value shows improvement as the years pass and, in my view, these beautiful figurines are an appreciating investment.
