Figurines. Collecting For Pleasure or Profit?

Image Royal Doulton FigurinesFigurines are passionately collected by many people worldwide. This hobby, which can easily turn into an obsession if you’re not careful, can certainly be rewarding on many levels and has a general appeal to people of differing age groups. You don’t have to be old and past it to collect fine china figurines believe me!

In this age of the internet, it is easier than ever to source and purchase affordable – and expensive – figurines. If you like to visit auctions, estate sales and garage sales keep your eyes open because you can still find some interesting and often valuable antique china figurines.

Often, well meaning parents and grandparents will try to encourage the collecting habit in their children or grandchildren. And recent studies have shown that collecting is an activity that improves a child’s organisation skills and general confidence. Also, because there are so many interesting figurines that might appeal to a child or teenager then many become avid collectors and continue their interest into adulthood. And cost need not deter young collectors as many pieces can be relatively inexpensive.

Of course, there are complete ranges of figurines which are manufactured specifically for collectors. One example is Hummel figurines. I think you either love or hate these figurines but they have certainly appreciated in value over the years and they still have a popular appeal.

Many collectors are not interested in the money value of pieces but will collect simply because they admire a particular kind of figurine. A friend of mine collects Capodimonte. Some of his figurines are quite valuable but most of his collection is of a modest value.

Avid collectors often chose to specialize in a particular type of figurine collectible. Angel figurines and the Willow Tree figurines are particularly popular at the moment and some high quality examples are available on the market. Whether they will prove good investments remains to be seen but many collectors are not too concerned about that outcome.

The main advantage of collecting fine china figurines, or any other type for that matter, is the fact that there is something for every taste. No matter what your interest you can usually find a figurine to satisfy your passion.

Many people will build a themed collection of figurines. I know that Lladro collectors like the idea of themed collections and they can look very stunning as a display. Other collectors may choose size, colour or any other niche idea that takes their fancy. The combinations are endless!

Buying figurines can be a risky business especially if you are aiming for the more expensive antique china variety. So knowledge of your market is very important. In fact, all figurine collectors should read as much as they can about their particular interest. Knowledge is power in the collecting game!

If you can, always buy pieces in excellent, if not perfect condition. Figurines that have been repaired, however expertly, diminish in value. So always be aware of what you are buying.

Display your figurines in your home. Place them in a display case if you fear that they might get damaged by pets or marauding children. But the important thing is to enjoy them, keep collecting and remain enthusiastic about your very special hobby – or should that be obsession?
