Wade Whimsies

Many fine pottery enthusiasts will immediately recognise the name of Wade and instantly think of the ever popular, Wade Whimsies. These small, Wade figurines have become highly collectible all over the world. They were originally intended as pocket novelties for children but now people of all age groups have become enthusiastic collectors.

The name of Wade has been established since 1810 when George Wade & Sons came into existence. And then, later on in that century, John Wade began the manufacture of teapots at Wade & Co. Various family members also operated potteries and these were all finally brought together by Sir George Wade, the man responsible for the Whimsies, in the 1950′s.

The Whimsies were originally produced from 1954 – 1959. They were marketed as small, boxed, collection sets. And then in the 1960′s many were presented as free gifts with Red Rose Tea in Canada and then in the US, from 1983 until the present day. How the Whimsies came into being is interesting and it also reveals how a necessary economic decision can often play a major part in the success a unique china figurine.

Due to the collapse of the market for their porcelain, electrical insulators, Wade (Ireland) based at Portadown, decided to produce miniature, pottery figures stamped Wade, England. This inspirational idea came from Iris Strayker Carryer (nee Wade), the eldest daughter of George Wade and the wife of the then factories manager. The small figurines soon became popular and have remained so today.

Specialist clubs, collectors’ gatherings and Wade fests now exist to feed the demand for these charming items.

Prices can vary depending upon the model so you need to do some research before you make an investment. As ever, the best prices are paid for those figures in perfect condition with clean, sharp moulding. Colours are various from the golden glaze to a golden glaze with added colours. The Irish Wade have a more distinctive, blue/gold glaze and the older figurines are finished in quite bright, clear colours.

Collecting Wade figurines is a fascinating speciality and you don’t need a big bank balance to make a start.
